The case of Mixi in Japan shows us how the growing popularity of social networks is leading to an ever-increasing demand for mobile access, which is predictable given that the majority of consumers are increasingly accustomed to relating to their friends through mobile phones and SMS. There are basically three ways in which users access social networks via mobile: – browsing the web; – through downloaded applications; – via text message.
From the analysis of the data provided in the Nielsen Uruguay Mobile Number List research, among those who access the web through a mobile device, in the United Kingdom 23% visit social networks (2 million people), the first country followed by the United States with 19% (10.6 million of people). There has been a real boom in the last year, with user growth of 249% in the UK and 156% in the USA. Generally, the most popular social networks via mobile coincide with those most popular via PC, and Facebook is in fact first in five of the six countries monitored by Nielsen; only in Germany is the leader Xing.
Applications for mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone are significantly contributing to the spread of the use of social networks via mobile: shortly after the launch of the iPhone 3G, Facebook, with one of the most popular applications for iPhone, has in fact overtaken MySpace in mobile usage in the USA. The third way to interact on social networks on the move is SMS, used mainly to update your status, but also to post messages directly on your profile. Nielsen calculated that as of the end of last year, nearly 3 million American mobile phone users were regularly sending text messages to Facebook.
