One year after the popularization of the term metaverse, following Zuckerberg's interview with The Verge and the subsequent announcement of directing his empire towards this new territory , it is time to take stock of the situation. Two documents gave me the opportunity: an international IPSOS-World Economic Forum survey and " Value creation in the metaverse ", a substantial report from the consultancy firm McKinsey which in 77 pages focuses, with an optimistic spirit, on the technical aspects, corporate and consumer attitudes, as well as the potential economic impact of the metaverse.
Positive signals emerge from both, but I invite you to also read my India Mobile Number Data post on concrete obstacles . Investments in the metaverse and the most affected sectors Following investments in new technologies linked to the creation of the metaverse, McKinsey goes so far as to claim that, in the first six months of 2022, 120 billion dollars were invested in the "broad field" of the metaverse (more than double what was spent in the whole of 2021 ). It must be said that the 69 billion spent by Microsoft for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard were also included in the calculation.
Investors can be divided into three types: large technology companies (Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet), Venture Capitalists who are financing initiatives and businesses also in the adjacent field of NFTs, brands who experiment with innovative projects. The sectors that are showing interest in the metaverse more than others, in terms of budgets that they declare they want to allocate to these experiences, are: energy (18%), automotive (17%), hi-tech (17 %), tourism (15%) and entertainment (15%). In the graph you can see the relationship between current adopters and future investments declared in the coming years. Consumer interest Familiarity with the terms metaverse, virtual and augmented reality varies among populations around the world, an IPSOS-World Economic Forum survey found.
